Covid-19 pandemic has hugely raised the responsibilities of parents. In the present context because of restriction of movements; children have constrained access to socialization. The isolation caused by restriction in movement has resulted in children being overly sensitive to minor domestic issues. This is affecting their psycho-social well-being and development. We as parents wish our children to be forever happy. As a parent it is our responsibility to provide an enriching environment with happiness, love and understanding. Warm and nurturing relationships between children and parents is important in developing resilience.
Upbringing of a child has an impact on physical growth and brain development. A supportive home learning environment provided by parents is positively associated with children’s early achievements and well-being.
All kids come across stress of varying degrees as they grow. It can be as simple as adapting to a new classroom or exam fear. It can be as severe as bullying by classmates /cyber bullies or abuse at home. Highest number of students suicides were recorded in 20191 in the past 25 years. Despite best efforts, parents can’t always protect kids from stress. So can we build resilience in children? Resilience will help children to cope up with challenges and bounce back. Building resilience in children is more than teaching life skills to children. Children learn from examples. So as a parent let us play a proactive role. we cannot shield our children from everything but these small efforts may help children to confront issues -
- Avoid helicopter parenting
- Praising accomplishments
- Do not accommodate every demand
- Boost your child's self-esteem
- Foster a strong emotional connection
- Create rules and expectations and apply them consistently
- Develop problem-solving skills in children
- Promote healthy risk-taking attitude
- Talk about emotions and ask them to label emotions
- Be a role model and discuss self-control by demonstrating coping skills
- Read, Sing and dance together, talk about your day
- Let them know that they can ask for help
- Encourage your child to help others
- Give them opportunities to think and act independently
- Encourage physical activities or sports
- Nurture optimism
- Let them talk
- Nurture a growth mindset
Parents always try to provide an enriching environment and show selfless commitment to children. Global Day of Parents provides an opportunity to appreciate all parents.
“Appreciate all parents throughout the world” is the theme of global parents day 2021.
Happy Parents day !!!
